The patient list she was looking at had a lot of names and addresses, including their first two nocturnum victims, but not much else that jumped out at her. Their third victim, Elm, wasn’t a patient, apparently. At least, not officially.

“Take a look at this.” Rush was pointing at Dr. Fitzgerald’s cell records.

Lucia got up from her spot across the coffee table and sat next to Rush on the couch, leaned in to get a better look. His body was warm and solid beside her, he smelled like clean soap, cigarettes, and whisky. She was starting to think of that combination as his smell, she realized. A strange thrill, almost like an electric shock, went through her when her leg brushed against his. It was an odd feeling, she decided, but not unpleasant. Not at all unpleasant.

She thought she could hear a sound too—almost like a voice speaking low from another room, too soft to understand.

Rush froze. The voice stopped.

“Oh, sorry.” After one beer on an empty stomach and not enough sleep, she'd forgotten all about the touch thing. She scooted farther away, putting some space between them.

A shiver seemed to pass through Rush’s whole body. He shook his head slowly like he was coming out of a trance. “It's…” He cleared his throat. “It's fine. So…” There was another long pause as he stared down at the file and then his eyes finally focused.

“The doctor made a series of calls the night before she died.” Rush tapped at the printout with his pen, now fully himself again. “Most were short, ten seconds or less, like she’d gotten someone’s voicemail. These three look like she talked to someone. Nine calls total over a ten-minute period. Most of these are NorthSide numbers.”

Lucia leaned in again, careful to keep her distance this time. She wasn't sure what had just happened, but she'd obviously crossed some kind of line. She scanned down the list of calls. “If she was calling her patients, she didn’t call all of them. This one is a SouthSide number,” she pointed out.

Rush pointed to one of the shorter calls. “I recognize this one from our files. It’s Sara Estevez’s cell.”

“She was already dead when this call was made. Fitzgerald didn’t know.”

“Yes.”

Lucia pulled her phone out. “Let me get this list to Mac and we’ll get names and addresses. Try to track some of these people down. They might be in danger.”

Rush nodded. “You do that, but meanwhile…” He picked his own phone off the table. “Give me one minute.”

Lucia watched as he searched each number. Only one returned anything useful. Rush frowned at the screen. “This number is a sandwich shop. The Late Night Bite.”

“North or South?”

“North, obviously.”

Lucia rolled her eyes at him. “Okay… Maybe she… got hungry? Doesn’t seem likely though, does it? Assuming she was right in the middle of calling her patients to warn them a serial killer might be stalking them.” She rubbed her eyes. She was tired and things were starting to not make sense.
